when vinyl is pressed, a manufacturer initially creates “test” pressings - so that the record label and artist can listen to and approve how they sound. these are prototypes of the records you’ve come to love. they are collectors items.

there are multiple test presses of each album released, so there is often a small surplus of the test pressings.

right now, our shelves are lined with about 25-ish test pressings looking for a good home. the next 25 orders from the list below will receive one alongside whatever they order.

Pale Black Negative is the 20th project from rapper and multi-instrumentalist Rhys Langston. It crystallizes his 10 year discography of genre abolition, while showcasing his strength as rap’s premier poet-etymologist. Though rapping remains his main instrument, this record fully unveils Langston’s singing talent in equal splendor. Presenting what he calls a “rapper’s singer-songwriter record,” he commandeers guitar, bass, clarinet, synths, banjo, and percussion to couch his poetry in alternative R&B, art rock, trip hop, and even roots blues music. In the 11 songs Rhys Langston’s linguistic eccentricity shows itself as scion of his West Coast forefathers, Freestyle Fellowship, as much as the eclectic production owes its range to his coming of age in the late aughts, listening to indie pioneers TV on the Radio. And read on the page his lyrics might resemble pages from a lost Amiri Baraka manuscript, until they are sung aloud more like Beck (maybe with a little more melanin).

Even with contemporary music’s post-genre conventions, rarely do songs so successfully balance technical, poetic rapping with soulful, genre-fluid melodies. Pale Black Negative compromises in neither form nor fashion. Its impressionist abstractions sit beside emotional candor, its bespoke language stands next to genuine pathos, and its layered harmonies bolster unflinching bars. Some songs were started in 2017 and others took shape in 2022, resulting in a slow cooked opus for our age of endless convenience and instant gratification. Magnum may it be, this product of a shoestring budget, an outdated DAW, and just enough nerve. A sui generis lexicon in poetry and timbre, this is Rhys Langston’s abstract autobiography across an expanse of word and sound.

Eulogy, the latest collaboration between Alexei Moon Casselle (Crescent Moon) and Andrew Broder, is a meditation on mortality, friendship, ancestry, and the cost of living in the modern world.

Both Casselle and Broder emerged from the fertile ground of the Minneapolis underground, each developing a distinct voice that helped define its sound. With Kill the Vultures, Casselle brought a stark, poetic sensibility to hip-hop that stood apart for its rawness and restraint. Broder, through his project Fog and a long list of collaborations, expanded the possibilities of production, composition, and atmosphere across genres. Though their paths have long run parallel, Eulogy finds them converging here in sharp focus.

The record opens with “Backbone,” featuring legendary Minneapolis MC I Self Devine (Micranots), a central figure in the city’s underground lineage and an early influence on both artists. Like their 2018 self-titled release for Baro Records, Eulogy draws from that shared heritage of textured production, evocative storytelling, and lyrics steeped in the lives of working people, balancing grit and grace in equal measure.

The album’s emotional summit arrives with “Trains,” inspired by Casselle’s ancestor who worked the railroads in the early twentieth century. The song connects to the album’s cover image of a Pullman porter, forming a layered reflection on inheritance and hierarchy in America, history rendered personal. With contributions from Davu Seru (percussion, AACM) and deVon Russell Gray (keys, McKnight Fellow), the track deepens the album’s contemplative tone, stretching toward something spiritual without ever leaving the ground.

By the closing track, “New Moon,” Eulogy has traveled through memory, loss, and renewal. Its sound world stands comfortably beside Broder’s acclaimed work with Armand Hammer, ELUCID, Circuit des Yeux, and Joe Rainey, yet remains distinctly its own, a concise and haunting statement from two enduring voices of the Minneapolis underground.

_

A lot of people spend their days vaguely anxious about the pandemonium they can feel about to sweep down on all of us. They see the cracks in the societal dam holding back total chaos, and – knowing it could go sideways any minute- they have a hard time going about their day… enjoying their lunch… relaxing on the weekend.  It’s like a splinter in the comfort zone in their brains… They can’t focus on anything because they’re way too aware of the cracks spreading in the thin ice we’re all walking on during these waning days of the empire.

But that’s not even the actual issue. The real problem is: they just don’t have the right soundtrack cued up for when that proverbial excrement hits that spinning fan blade of reality. To put it another way, they haven’t heard Wave Generators yet.

This is the album you’re going to want to reach for when you swear allegiance to Lord Humongous, Master of the Wastes, and start cruising around with your crew of marauders looking for fledgling-city-states growing in the husks of abandoned corporate campuses that you can sack and pillage and then hold a little post-raid-party in the  ruins.

This is the music that plays from the speakers mounted to the giant drill that the army of mole people drives through 5th avenue as they commence their invasion of the upper crust. Even though the headline news is, “this means the destruction the surface dwellers’ society and the age of Mole-Man dominance,”  you can’t help but wonder, “where can I hear more of that subterranean battle anthem though?!”

This is the soundtrack you want in your earphones when your life drops you into a straight up movie scene foot chase scene, tearing through active restaurant kitchens, jumping rooftop to rooftop. It’ll be way too intense to fully enjoy it and you’re gonna be winded as hell because you’re not Tom Cruise and it you’re being honest with yourself; you’ve neglected your cardio.  But the way the tracks line up with the near death moments and the inevitable moment when you think you’re home free but then round the corner and smack face first into the biggest of your pursuers, …. It’s all so satisfying it’s almost worth it that you’re about to be jammed into the trunk of a mid-90s Ford Taurus.

Wave Generators is exactly what you‘ve been looking for, without ever knowing you were looking.  But don’t expect to take any breaks now that you found it. If anything- now that you have this last crucial tool you’ve been looking for, your busy season begins. Crank the volume, get out there, and get after it.
