Not Who I Thought I Was: the evil who brought us joy (12" Vinyl LP) w/ Insert
For years 89 the Brainchild earned a reputation floating around the NJ/NYC underground. MC, writer, event organizing, broadcasting, you name it. After wearing many hats, it was post lockdowns where his art began to finally cut through the noise. After a string of dancefloor aimed bangers made noise online, 89 partnered with Fused Arrow Records for the critically acclaimed Night Lives mixtape hosted by Fatboi Sharif & DJ Boogaveli. A digital EP + west coast excursion later; Bay Area label, Handsmade, joined the mix to help present us the debut vinyl from garden state’s own.
“NOT WHO I THOUGHT I WAS” is clearly a self realization; but “The Evil Who Brought Us Joy”… what is the Evil? A person[s], a culture, a nation? Here, 89 the Brainchild reconsiders his desires & habits whilst navigating a community cannibalizing upon itself.
Weaving through spaces crafted by a who’s who of underground producers; Each sound different than the previous, 89 has in tow a colorful assortment of vocalists/MCs each bringing their signatures to such a unique release. Feeling more like an ensemble piece than other artists' collaborations, a clear picture is painted despite how uncertain things may seem for our characters.
